In a rather scary scenario for Goan society, the number of young women in Goa who contracted HIV in 2004 was found to be almost twice the per cent of young men who got the infection in the same age group. An age and gender-wise classification of HIV-infected persons in Goa done by the Goa State AIDS Control Society (GSACS) for 2004, shows that Goan women in the age group of 15 to 29 who contracted HIV comprise 37 per cent.
